Just like air cannot be seen with the naked eyes, the power of meditation cannot be felt without practicing it. There are a lot of articles, research papers and magazines available to people that explain all about this life-changing yoga. Also, we have many ancient and contemporary books written by various great personalities like Swami Vivekananda, Osho, etc. who have beautifully described the potential of meditation. But reading such literature is not enough to feel the change unless you practice it.

Meaning of Meditation

Meditation does not mean getting into a hypnotic state or connecting with supernatural powers, it intends to take control of the mind resulting in peace, focus and calmness. It is a conscious-changing way, a mental exercise performed in a still seated position and with eyes closed, which has proven benefits on the psychological well-being of an individual.

Roots of Meditation

Meditation is not confined to any particular theology anyone can do it irrespective of their religion but its earliest traces are found in the Vedas (Hinduism). It is also popular among Buddhists and there are hardly any people who do not know about the connection of Lord Gautam Buddha with meditation. He attained enlightenment by practicing this and gave many principles that can help mankind to attain Nirvana.

Does Science Support the Power of Meditation?

This question might arise in your mind and the answer to this query is yes and there is no doubt in this fact. A lot of studies conducted on meditation have concluded that practicing it has resulted in stress and anxiety reduction, increase concentration level, controlled blood pressure, improved blood circulation, lower heart rate, etc. Further, the studies have shown benefits against an array of conditions physical as well as mental, including irritable bowel syndrome, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Some Tips For Meditation

Here are some general guidelines that one must keep in mind while practising meditation:

Posture: The spinal cord should absolutely be erect right from the lower back to the neck without leaning on anything.

Time: Morning is considered to be the perfect time to meditate as it keeps you positive and full of energy throughout the day.

Place: You should choose a spot where you can sit without any interruption, it should be quiet, clean and tidy, which results in a better influence on the mind.

Duration: You can start with as little as 5 minutes and can continue it for an hour depending on your wish.

Buddha has said that “What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow. Our life is the creation of our mind.” Therefore, to have positive thoughts, we must have a clear, calm and composed mind, one must practice meditation as it is the need of the time in this stressful life.
